gloomy, pessimistic
These words are nearly but not quite synonymous. A gloomy person is dejected, depressed, or sad; a pessimistic person is also gloomy but holds the opinion that everything is evil now and will continue to remain that way. A pessimistic person is exceptionally and excessively gloomy and, furthermore, tends to remain a pessimist indefinitely. One's gloom may soon depart; one's pessimism reflects a philosophical attitude that evil in the world has always outweighed the good.
